Critics And Reviews Of The Movie: The Personal History Of David Copperfield
Associated Press (Jake Coyle) 30 October 2020
An exuberantly positive film honors the life power of art and oddity, who couldn’t handle a little of his ability right now.
The New Republic (Josephine Livingstone) 18 September 2020
Dev, he performs a beautiful Copperfield; healthy, kind, charismatic, and packed with a naive curiosity and wonders even within adulthood (and, yes, fabulous hair).
Entertainment Weekly (Mary Sollosi) 29 August 2020
An honest passion for and belief in the source stuff shines through in its humor and good nature.
Chicago Sun-Times (Richard Roeper) 29 August 2020
It is packed with creative if obvious explanation on traditional class snobbery.
Rolling Stone (Peter Travers) 28 August 2020
Creative a don’t-miss movie out of Charles Dickens’ 1850 era of a novel, Amando Inannicci and the grand cast, headed by a never-better Dev Patel, compute a blast of crazy, modern impiety that is totally irresistible.
Wall Street Journal (Joe Morgenstern) 28 August 2020
I needed to cover this one for its colorful character. Fact is told, though, the movie, which Mr. Iannucci has written and directed a screenplay with Simon Blackwell, is packed out on its brilliance and ultimately exhausting.
TIME Magazine (Stephanie Zacharek) 28 August 2020
Creative, appealing, and accommodated to Dickens’ spirit’s differences, Patel is a kind Copperfield for today, a brilliant young man who’s ready to defeat adversity and go far.
ReelViews (James Berardinelli) 28 August 2020
The Personal History of David Copperfield is a superb and funny drama.
Minneapolis Star Tribune (Chris Hewitt) 27 August 2020
As he narrates his story, is David memorizing correctly? Is he a good narrator? Who appreciates? But he’s a fleet, humorous and warmhearted one.
Los Angeles Times (Justin Chang) 27 August 2020
Iannucci is a genius at discovering absurdity everywhere he sees, and he knows that few items are more ridiculous than fixed prejudice and earned wisdom.
Washington Post (Ann Hornaday) 26 August 2020
Charles Dickens and Armando Iannucci, such a fabulous pair of producing and directing a movie packed with so much humor, fun, laughter, and thrill.

The fun in The Personal History of David Copperfield sometimes similarly tends near the misty and overly gentle. However, it’s challenging to envy it that it’s also able of bright fires of delight.
Houston Chronicle (Cary Darling) 24 August 2020
“Copperfield,” the most personal work of Iannucci, he engaged with the script of the movie to represents such inventive and visually bright, multicultural applauds of Dickens’ old-school English world is appreciating.
Tribune News Service (Katie Walsh) 22 August 2020
They’ve got Dickens’ story and cut it down to the powerful and the laughs. The effect is quite fragile, yet also a deep tale about owning and writing your own story.
Chicago Tribune (Michael Phillips) 22 August 2020
Despite some longueurs throughout the two-thirds mark, as there usually is with well-worn rambling adventures, “The Personal History of David Copperfield” is a medicine with a powerful, moving coda.
Audience Reviews Of The Movie: The Personal History Of David Copperfield
Brilliant, excellent, and bright! So beautiful, superb acting. I have watched it four times already. This could be my most favorite movie.
Fresh, entertaining, different, and surprising. The film will give you a feel of watching something good and inherently positive movie. You will love the way characters express their feelings, especially Dev Patel.

The Personal History of David Copperfield is extraordinary!!!
I love it: no extra performances and no additional acting. Armando and Dev Patel were the biggest reason to make the movie a super-duper hit.
Confusing and false artistic, a complete mess, with an Indian performing the so-called character and a Chinese guy, seriously?
It’s both a faithful adaptation and a re-imagining; the film can work in both ways.
It may look confusing/mysterious in some sections throughout, but I like the ending: incredible movie and worth watch.
The Personal History of David Copperfield gives a smart, and funny take on the famous Charles Dickens tale made even great thanks to the beauty of its leads!
Beautiful madness of confusion where many people would notice a patch or maybe two.
Dev Patel was excellent while performing his world-class acting. The film kept you entertained the entire time, and the historical story was done so correctly.
Funny, smart, very friendly, and very well performed. The Victorian era is lively and bright. I will definitely give eight out of ten as a rating to the movie.
Complex, tedious, nonsensical. It was nicely arranged, of course.
Pleasant strange characters but a little too unrealistic for me. I like the selection of the cast, especially Dev Patel.
Funny at sometimes. I like the movie. It gives us some historical events to remember. Of course, Armando did an excellent job writing such an entertaining story and presenting it to us in this pandemic situation.
This movie gives you a feel to not read the novel at all. Just watch the film entirely, and you will eventually understand what it would be written in the novel.
A tremendous funny story of overcoming difficulties and discovering the joy in life.
